Chapter 20 - The fire

Torag looked up from the flames to find Erisi on the roof of the keep, her face lifted to the stars. The shouting and laughter of his family around him echoed in the night sky, joined by the occasional high-pitched chattering of striped hyenas roaming the desert. Stories of deal-makers and warriors returning from their missions flowed around him. There was no hierarchy here, no need for commands. Aided by Chandra’s eye-watering brand of alcohol, banter flew back and forth, and flirting turned into demons disappearing into the night. His family bonded here.

Tonight, like every night, Erisi stayed away.

This time, she wasn’t even watching them from her position on the keep. She was pulling away. His fingers clenched around his cup. He’d seen it happen the moment she realized she’d hurt him.

Once again, he cursed Beelzebub. For a moment, he had hoped…

She had let him in. In the caves, she’d let him see the whole of her and it had been everything he never knew he needed. Someone strong, brave enough to share her pain. Someone who saw his darkness and still looked at him as though he was whole and strong. Someone he could trust with this family.

Even the wildfire demon she was terrified of had protected them all. Her sheer power left him in awe. The pain he saw in her eyes made him want to wrap around her, protect her.

He set down his cup.

“I’m going to get her,” he told Yerle, straightening from his spot and dusting the sand off his indigo dhoti.

“I’m so winning this bet.” Yerle pumped his fist in the air. “You’re right. It’s time for our hot little leader to join us.”

Torag stilled, glaring at his insolent friend. “Careful…”

“This infatuation of yours is giving me so much to work with, my friend. You have no idea.”

He took a step toward Yerle, who backed away with a big grin on his face. Sighing, Torag threw up his hands and turned toward the keep.

Yerle shouted behind him. “The latest bet is when the both of you will finally collide. I’m giving it two more days.”

His friend’s laughter behind his back made him smile. When he looked up at Erisi, longing flared. Four days ago, he’d gotten a taste of their fire when they were in the caves. Now it consumed him, day and night.

Heart racing, he entered the main hall of the keep. He climbed the ladder to the rooftop and smiled when he found the trapdoor open. She had never needed words to make her intentions clear.

When he joined her on the north-eastern guard tower, Erisi didn’t turn around. He moved close enough for his skin to brush against the soft leather on her back.

For a beat, silence reigned. Then she leaned against him with a small sigh.

Locking his arm around her waist, he kissed her neck and murmured, “Contemplating the stars again?”

Erisi huffed. “Trying to figure out how to get Beelzebub to Lucifer. The bastard is still dropping in and out of consciousness.
